Japanese Textile Innovation from Sudō Reiko

The exhibition ‘Making NUNO – Japanese Textile Innovation from Sudō Reiko’ examines the work of the renowned Japanese textile designer, Sudō Reiko, whose innovative approach breaks through the boundaries of traditional textile manufacturing, paving the way for new methods of sustainable production.
Sudō Reiko, trained industrial designer and head of design at the NUNO textile company for more than 30 years, blends traditional Japanese handicraft in her work with new technologies and unusual materials. She combines such various raw materials as waste products from silk production, hand-made paper, nylon tape or thermoplastics. The designer pays particular attention to the sustainability of materials and processes, to regional value-creation, and to the preservation of established handicrafts.
In the exhibition titled NUNO, the visitor can expect five large-format installations that plainly demonstrate the complex production process involved in the materials designed by Sudō Reiko. To accompany the exhibition, drawings, sketches, raw materials and design prototypes will be on show.
Engagement with the work of the Japanese designer reveals that innovation and creativity can push forward the sustainability of the global production of textiles. Designs by Sudō Reiko can be found in international museums such as the MoMA in New York and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
